Doctor says I have to wait 1 year to see if eradicated

Post by cugger »

Hi all , I am new here and am glad I found these forums , they have really helped a lot . I took the triple treatment 3 weeks ago and went back to see my doctor and he told me I have to wait one year to see if the H-pylori is eradicated . From what I have learned through much research is that if triple therapy does not work I would need different antibiotics and maybe 14 days of treatment . This is a new doctor to me and waiting one year just don`t seem right , He thinks I may have IBS but wont know for sure until I have a colonoscopy . I also spoke to my pharmacist and he was puzzled as well . Is their something I am missing here because that just don`t sound right ?

you dont have to wait a year. if you have not been taking any medication since the last 3 weeks, you can ask your doctor (or another doctor) to give you a breath test to confirm your HP eradication.

Thanks Helico_expert for your reply but apparently here in Grand Falls Windsor , Newfoundland they don`t offer a breath test so that would leave endoscopy which takes about 3 - 4 months here , stool test and then blood test . I even called the minister of health and they know nothing . I know I have to be tested after 3 weeks and if not eradicated then I guess its more antibiotics but for my doctor telling me to wait a year is not right . I could develop other issues in that time and even cancer if not eradicated . I might add my doctor also stated any test now will be positive as it takes a year for it to leave the system so I am amusing this would be through a blood test . I like to hear your feedback on this please and thank you .

stool test is possible after 2 weeks of stopping antibiotics. best outcome is after 4 weeks.

the antibody in your blood can be positive for months or years. So blood test is never accurate to check for HP eradication. However, if you are able to get the titre of the IgG/IgA, and you can monitor the trend of the IgG/IgA. If it's decreasing every 2-3 months, then it's a sign of treatment success.

Totally agree Helico_expert . I will get to the bottom of it . One more question I want to ask . If I get tested and it is not eradicated is it best to wait a short period or longer period to start the second round of therapy . My thoughts are asap as the first round of antibiotics are still in the system . but my argument to that would be it would be really hard on your system and kill any good bacteria in your system if any left.Or if you dont have much or any pain to wait longer and let the gut heal for a period of time .

I forgot to add that my doctor thinks I have ibs . he made this diagnoses just after my treatment . He has done no retesting of blood and I dont understand how he can make this diagnoses after one pre blood work . Is it possible I have symptoms of ibs and still healing . I didn't mention this until reading other post that it occurred to me . I feel a little better ever day but I had no problems like I am having now or maybe I could have developed ibs 3 months ago when I first start having the pain and when he detected h - pylori maybe I had both . Am I making sense , lol

If you are tested positive, you can have another treatment straight away.

It is true that all bacteria, good and bad, will be eradicated. Perhaps you can take some herbs or probiotics to help the recovery of good bacteria or suppress the bad bacteria.

Some people does develop IBS after antibiotic treatment. The actual mechanism is unknown. Scientist thinks that it's the overgrow of the bad bacteria that induce IBS.

Your primary symptom may or may not be because of H. pylori. But H. pylori is easier to treat than IBS. Also, the antibiotics can sometimes cure IBS (if it is due to bad bacteria overgrow). Nevertheless, H. pylori is a harmful bacteria and it is better to have it eradicated as early as possible.
