Transmision from Pets

Post by Jbeeman »

I was wondering if anyone has any information on h pylori having been transmitted from a pet (dog) . I have recently been diagnosed with hp after some extremely painful stomach pains. The antibiotics seemed to have worked and I hope to get a breath test done soon. I have read that 1% of cases are thought to have been transmitted from dogs. I have two dogs that coincidentally both eat poop. My question is should I have my dogs tested, and should they be treated to prevent the risk of them infecting or re-infecting me?

It is true that there are cases of pet and host transmission. However, it can only occurs when you constantly sharing your food with your pets. I believe that it is more likely your pets eating your left overs rather than the other way round. Nevertheless, it is very rare for Helicobacter to jump from host to host (in terms of species), because the stomach environment of each host is very different. But, if you give enough chance, mutation can happened and successful adaptation can happen.

I dont think it is necessary to test or check your pets. Even if they are treated, there is no way stopping them to be reinfected by other animals. So, I would just see them as positive and be as hygienic as possible.
