how soon does the breath test turn positive after infection?

Breath tests are the most accurate way of detecting H.pylori without actually having an endoscopy (stomach examination). Breath tests are especially useful after treatment to make sure H.pylori is cured. Urea breath tests are known to be completely harmless. Either C14-urea or C13-urea tests are used. Read about them at the diagnosis section at http://www.helico.com/diag_breath.html where a diagram can be found. C14-urea breath tests use a radioactive tracer but such a tiny amount that it can be used safely at any age. It is a 15 minute test, convenient and inexpensive. The C13-urea test uses a stable isotope of carbon which is also harmless but requires two breath samples and takes about 30 minutes. Both tests have accuracy greater than 90%.

how soon does the breath test turn positive after infection?

Post by susananne »

I am wondering how soon the breath test turns positive after possible infection. I am anxious to have the test, but i dont want to do it too soon, as i dont want a false negative. I understand it takes 3 weeks for blood tests to turn positive for antibodies , but I am pretty sure it would be less for the breath test to turn positive. Does anyone know the answer to this? i cant not find any info on the internet regarding this question. thanks

it only takes 10 minutes for UBT to show result. However, depending on the laboratory testing time, it'll probably take a week or 2 before you receive the test result.

there is no such thing as "doing it too soon", unless you had taken antibiotics or any acid reducing agents.

in order for UBT to work, you'll need to have a acidic stomach. to further reduce the false negative result, you have to stop antibiotic for at least 2 weeks.

thank you, i was actually wondering how long from the time of possible infection-to the time of breath testing is it necessary to wait. is 2 weeks long enough, from the date of possible infection (if you havent taken any meds) to have a sufficient bacterial load to have a positive reponse to the test > i guess that was what i am asking? thanks

oh.. tricky... but I would assume 2 weeks is more than enough for the infection to be detectable. However, it not easy to be infected in adult-hood.
