Expert Advice Needed

Post by Atxjen »

Hello,
My teenage daughter was diagnosed with h.pylori is December with a stool test and completed triple therapy. Her breath test results a couple of weeks ago came back negative.

She is being seen at Dell in Austin, Texas and the gastrointestinal specialist worried me because she said they had a patient who had both a stool and a breath test that came back negative but an endoscopy showed h.pylori was still there.

My daughter is doing a probiotic, vitamin supplements, eating a FODMAP diet but has been constipated. We were told that could be what is causing the IBS- like symptoms. So, The gastrointestinial specialist ordered an abdominal X-ray to rule out a blockage and had her do a colon cleanse prior. First X-ray came back inconclusive so she had to do a second cleanse and X-ray (waiting for results). The doctor also has her taking 1-3 capfuls of Miralax and 1 Elax daily to help her move her bowels which hasn’t helped much.

Currently, post negative breath test, her symptoms are:
Pain immediately after meals

Bubbly gas in between meals - horrible for one hour post-meals —plus after meals around belly button - super hard, pain, compaction

Burning middle of stomach comes/go around belly button through day but no burping or acid reflux

lower area by groin is hard

Should those who have had h.pylori do an endoscopy either way even thought she had a negative breath test after antibiotic treatment and two weeks after stopping PPI?

Do you think the issues she is still having simply are due to the triple antibiotic therapy and bacterial imbalance that can occur afterwards?

Thank you!

if your daughter is young and healthy, there is no need to worry.
what is the breath test result score? if it's borderline negative, then it can be suspicious. But if the cut off is 50 and she got a value below 10, then it's consider very negative and it's most likely true.

You can also repeat the breath test a few months later and see if UBT value drop further. That would reassure of the negative result.

As for the symptoms, it may or may not be because of H. pylori. But we hope that without H. pylori, the stomach will gradually become healthier and stronger, and eventually gives your daughter a better quality of life.

I also need some advice. I was diagnosed with h pylori in October after returning from Africa and experiencing symptoms such as stomach sounds and loose stools. I took the antibiotics even though my symptoms weren't very bad, which I really regret. I felt better for a couple weeks after treatment but eventually the symptoms returned. Except this time the symptoms were more stomach burning, abdominal discomfort, and just a weird feeling like something isn't right. I did a breath test earlier this month and it came back positive for h pylori. My doctor then presribed a treatment of amoxilin, clarothymicin, metronidazole, and a PPI. I already took amoxilin and clarothymicin during the first treatment so I doubt they'll work this time. At this point I'm considering just ignoring the symptoms and hope they eventually go away. I really don't want to take antibiotics again as they can ruin your gut and it's hard to recover. At the same time people mention things like mastic gum and manuka honey but they come with diet changes and aren't proven.

I just need some advice on what to do. Should I just wait and see what happens or if symptoms worsen? Or should I try out some natural remedies?

I'm only 21 years old and this is hampering my quality of life. Has anyone been through a failed initial treatment and what did you guys do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I hope this eventually stops bothering me and I can stop being worried. Thanks

Hi,

It is always better to have H. pylori eradicated. you cannot suppress the symptom forever. Unfortunately, there is no proven natural product that can effectively removing H. pylori. So your best chance is still to try another antibiotic treatment.

if you had already tried Clarithromycin, and Metronidazole, then these antibiotics wont work in your second treatment.

H. pylori cannot become resistant to Amoxicillin and bismuth. So you can try these two antibiotics again. however, two of them is not strong enough to get rid of H. pylori, you need one more antibiotic that you have not tried. eg. Tetracycline, Levofloxacin, Furazolidone, or Rifabutin. Check with your doctor which one he has access to and comfortable with.

Your story sounds just like mine. I got hpylori after a trip to Africa and symptoms were mild(stomach sounds and occasional looser stool). Was considering not going on the antibiotics but eventually went on them and about to finish my triple therapy tomorrow thank God. Where in Africa did you go?

My first treatment was just Amoxicilin and Clarithromycin and a PPI. The new treatment is Amoxicillin, Clarithromycin, Metronidazole and Pantoprazole. Metronidazole is the antibiotic that he added in. I'm honestly not sure if I want to take this new treatment and will take some time to think about it. 50% of the world is affected with h pylori so I know it's not life threatening but it's definitely causing me problems. Let me know if the second treatment can do the job or if I should maybe ask my doctor for another treatment. I will definitely try some probiotics this time if I end up taking the antibiotics.

I went to Somalia. My problems started about a month after returning back home. I'll see what happens and if my symptoms get worse. I don't like the idea of taking all these antibiotics when there is no 100% proof that h pylori will be eradicated.

Ok I went to Ghana and my problems started a couple of days before I returned home. I eat and drank pretty much everything which resulted in the dodgy stomach (my wife and brother were also sick and diagnosed with HPylori coming home). Initially I had diahrrea and mild stomach pain for 3 long weeks after returning as well but that went.

Maybe take the medication in addition to the natural remedies this time? You probably should give it another attempt in my opinion.
