Why does treatment usually involve different antibiotics at once?

The cure of Hp usually requires antibiotics. Other things have been tried and have a weaker effect.

I'm just curious why H Pylori needs multiple antibiotics at the same time to eliminate it.

Thanks in advanced!

A very good question. We dont really understand why. If H. pylori never become resistant to Amoxicillin, why cant we kill it with Amoxicillin alone? This is a frequently asked question. However, in early days we have found out that Amoxicillin alone only has a cure rate of 20%. Amoxicillin + PPI has a cure rate of 50%. Amoxicillin + Clarithromycin + PPI has a cure rate of over 80%. That is why this combination became the standard triple therapy.

After many years of clinical trial, we have also noticed that high dose PPI + and high dose Amoxicillin can also deliver a cure rate of 80%. However, not everyone respond well to PPI. More trials are needed to reduce the use of multiple antibiotics.

20mg Omeprazole is standard dose. You can take double or triple the standard dose. Because some people metabolise the PPI faster than other people. So you need to discuss this with your doctor.
