Not feeling better after eradication

Post by hpylorisux »

Hi all, I am in a bit of distress here and fearing that I will never get back to normal.

Diagnosed h pylori positive in Jan 2018, moderate chronic gastritis and moderate esophagitis. Had been feeling symptoms in Dec, lump in throat, epigastric pain, stitch under ribs.

Treated with triple therapy, finished Feb 3rd. Had the breath test on Mar 3rd, h pylori “undetectable”.

So, here we are 7 weeks after completion of the treatment and I still feel like crap, and now I think I have IBS as well.

Symptoms now: pain under sternum, waking up 4 times per night from pain, lump in throat, constipation alternating with very loose stools, lower abdomen cramps, sky-high anxiety (fearing cancer or that it may never end).

I can’t find any relief. The pain is dull and low grade but it never goes away, except two days ago when I was symptom free 4 hours. Nothing works, pepto bismol, Prilosec, Tums, mylanta, nothing.

I need some advice and encouragement if you would be so kind.

I think most importantly is that you are now free of H. pylori. Therefore, your symptoms will only get better, eventually.

Some people does take a while to get back to normal. There are many theories. One of them is that your stomach has been under this chronic infection for a very long time (decades). Assume that you were infected since childhood, as you grew older, your stomach is evolving to adapt to such infection. Now that the stomach is suddenly free of germs again, it is going to take time to learn how to adapt to such situation.

It's good to hear that you have this episode of feeling "great" two days ago. Although it's only a couple of hours, hopefully you'll experience more of this episode more frequently in the near future.

Meanwhile, I think you are doing the right thing. keep taking mylanta if you need to. You can try some herbal or natural remedy to regulate your inner health.

Don't worry my brother, I'm currently going true exactly same thing.
what i do is praying GOD everyday to heal me
you are not along I'm feeling a lot of anxiety as well, although i have not confirm eradication yet but i have faith in God that is gone.
tomorrow is going to be 3 weeks since i finished my treatment and some hours i feel fine like you did but some hours or even complete days i don't
i lost a lot of weight like 20 lb and some wear feeling that make me stress and anxious
i live in Houston Texas and we are going to overcome this brother so don't feel you are along with this.
tell you doctor to give you some Hyoscyamine 0.125, this pills make me relax my intestines and stomach before meals even-though i don't get hungry
but i still take them 20 minutes before meals. (minimize bloating, sharp pains, gas and anxiety at list for few hours so you get to eat at list something)
My doctor say that i have IBS syndrome and that was after H pylori treatment.
By the way i'm still taking omeprazole 40 mg morning

I hope this help you

God bless.

Thank you Helico expert for your comments.

I wish Mylanta would work for me. It just doesn't. It is the times between meals that I am in most pain or feeling queasy. That is the time I need to find something to settle the feeling. Any suggestions? It is worse at night, about 3 hours after going to sleep I wake with a feeling of epigastric pain. I take Tums or Pepto, but they don't work. So then I drift off to sleep for 2 hours until I am awakened once again.

The only time I feel ok is while I am eating.

My GI offered a CT scan and a colonoscopy, though he didnt think them necessary. Do I think I should get them done just in case?

Maybe I am spending too much time worrying about my symptoms and being so hyper-vigilant.

you may want to try something stronger than mylanta then. Have you tried PPI such as rabeprazole? you should be able to get it from pharmacy without prescription.
