Helicobacter aftermath

The cure of Hp usually requires antibiotics. Other things have been tried and have a weaker effect.

HELLO EVERYONE,

It's been 2 years since my last post (check the first few pages of this thread) and things have changed dramatically for myself. I will however bring everyone up to speed with my health/tests/status first.

I DO NOT CONDONE THAT PEOPLE SHOULD GO DIRECTLY DOWN MY TREATMENT PATH AND EVERYONE SHOULD FULLY REALISE THAT THEIR BODIES ARE DIFFERENT TO OTHER PEOPLE - that being said, lets crack on!

I am a 26 year old male who suffered H.Pylori just over 3 years ago. Symptoms were, heartburn, excessive nausea and vomiting, weight loss and upper left abdominal pain. I had an OGD to confirm diagnosis and recieved standard triple therapy as per NICE guidelines. Over the coming months, my symptoms remained but the H.Pylori was eradicated (as confirmed by the second OGD). I was advised that over the coming months the symptoms (nausea + abdo pain = functional dyspepsia) would subside and rightly so, given that the majority of systematic reviews on H.Pylori indicate so and do not acknowledge the prevalence of an 'aftermath'.

Over the next year, I continued to harrass medical professionals about my symptoms as it was having a strong impact on my poor quality of life. I became socially reclusive, I stopped playing al sports (because of nausea) and my nutrition was extremely poor. All available tests (CT/USS/Bloods) were NAD and by the time it hit feb 2011 I was days from taking my own life, because my quality of life was so poor and I couldn't take the pain any longer. My friends stepped in and helped me and my depression was formally recognised. For the next 2 years I struggled on.

Around 6 months ago I decided to re-initiate medical investigations as one last shot. This was the fourth consultant I had seen on this matter. I went in with an open mind and ultimately knew that there was very little he or she could do, so I was open to any premise.
First I had a repeat OGD (my 3rd one so far) but performed in a way that I could see the tv as the camera went down. My stomach was healthy and no H.Pylori was present. This allowed my mind to accept that there was nothing physically visible irritating the stomach.
As a result we decided to treat my symptoms; STOMACH PAIN and NAUSEA as seperate entities.
To treat the pain, I was started on Nortriptyline 10mg and advised by the 'Pain Clinic' to titrate this up to 75 mg slowly. This took 2 months to achieve as it made me sleepy and my mouth dry but each time I increased the dose, my pain slowly faded more and more. By the time I hit 75mg, the pain had gone completely, and even in the mornings when the pain used to be at its worst, I felt pain free which was an amazing feeling.

As a result of now being pain free 24/7, my nausea slowly subsided. To this day it is currently half of what it used to be but the recovery has been great and very pleasing. My quality of life has improved DRAMATICALLY, I can now eat what I want, when i want and I don't have abdo pain any more. I guess the impression therefore is ?nerve pain secondary to gastric ulcers. Unfortunately I cannot find many studies relating to this (And as a medical professional, I do alot of research!) so this area is very much in the dark at the moment.

Therefore, for those who perhaps still have symptoms from H.Pylori i.e. nausea and abdominal pain, worst in the mornings when you get up, but not as bad when you get a lie in, you can perhaps suggest to TRIAL something for nerve pain. However as I said earlier, I cannot advocate that people follow this word for word or take my story as legit evidence, rather you should seek yourself to find the most holistic solution. I promised myself that if i ever found a cure/solution, I would share that information so that people do not have to live in pain anymore.

Good luck to you all and feel free to message me if you are after some more information.

I tested negative 2/15/13 after 2 rounds of antibiotics...however, i am still having issues digesting food properly...i only feel ok eating boiled chicken and vegetables in small portions. My biggest concern is that i continue to lose weight (30yr male 5"10 137lbs). I think it might be simply due to lack of calories but whenever i try to eat more i get bloating and burping and nausea. Any ideas or suggestion for diet would be very much appreciated...

I signed up to answer Vlade31...

I noticed everyone here used antibiotics to rid themselves of h. pylori. I have read many accounts from actual doctors who have used Coconut oil (a good virgin cold pressed one) to eliminate the bacteria without all the problems associated with antibiotics. You don't become resistant to this type of thing. I started looking in to this because my great aunt had it and could not seem to manage the antibiotics and was just going to live with it. Many think that as much as half the population are infected, some just have more symptoms than others. The vast majority of people with stomach ulcers have the bacteria, but only a small percent of people with it actually get ulcers. I would guess, depending on the the time you had it, it has messed with the acid and enzyme production for breaking down food and that it will probably take some time to get it back to normal since your body became adjusted to it originally. Since you took antibiotics you probably have relatively little good bacteria left as well. Depending on if you have a leaky gut, which according to Mayo even commensal bacteria can cause irritation if you have that condition (I can tell because when I take a good broad probiotic I bloat high up in my stomach), you may have to cure that first. If not, a good broad probiotic formula should help over time. The GAPS diet has a lot of soothing type suggestions for food for people and children with these issues and more.

I am only able to drink some raw milk, cultured products and some fermented foods to get some good bacteria in to my system until I can take probiotics for repopulation. I cook an organic chicken in a slow cooker once a week for about a day and then pour the broth into bottles and have one cup in the morning and evening with an egg yolk whipped in. It sounded gross, but actually tastes pretty good. I make a good calorie heavy alfredo sauce with heavy cream and parmesan cheese reduced and thickened with an egg yolk. Use the chicken (and mushrooms if you like) in the sauce and pour it over spaghetti squash noodles. It is delicious and lots of calories. Perhaps try to follow some kind of low carbohydrate, high fat and moderate/low protein diet. Many people have problems with gluten and grains in general without even realizing it. Many of the things we eat are loaded with pesticides, genetically modified, etc. and subjectively, I believe has a lot to do with many of our health problems. Look in to things like GAPS menus, low carb menus that require a lot of fat (which you seem to need) and don't expect immediate relief, just continual progress toward ultimate relief.

Best wishes for your recovery.

There can be a number of reasons why the symptoms take time to clear up.

1. H pylori is still there (even if a test says negative, the H pylori can still be there)

2. It takes time for the gut lining to heal in some people (as you correctly say)

3. There are other bugs in the system that are causing the continuation of symptoms.
(e.g. Candida overgrowth)

You may like to try taking some bone broth, glutamine, DGL, zinc to help increase the
speed of healing in your gut.

4. As counter-intuitive as it may seem, you may also have LOW stomach acid levels,
which can cause heartburn symptoms.

I've found that diligently working on these factors generally helps my clients improve
their symptoms at a faster rate.

Hope this helps!

Hello all,

My father was recently tested for Heliocobacter and started on the 2 week triple treatment. His brother developed stomach cancer and my father's doctor thought it best to test my father for Helicobacter and treat him.

He just started the triple treatment 2 days ago and suffers from minor pain. After reading this thread, I have noticed many people suffering from discomfort and in some instances severe pain. These 3 broad spectrum antibiotics that doctors prescribe to rid Helicobacter must also attack good bacteria in the stomach.

Has anybody ever thought of a stool transplant from a family member? If my father experiences abnormal stomach pain or a different reaction to the same foods after his treatment is over, I would ask my doctor to consider replenishing his good stomach bacteria with mine. I dont think any downside exists for Fecal microbiota transplantation, or stool transplant.

Any thoughts?

you are right about antibiotics killing good bacteria.

diarrhea is the normal side effect of antibiotics. I assume your father "stomach pain" refer to diarrhea?

The stool transplant method is more suitable for people with lower bowel disease (IBD). you'll need to speak to a specialist and see if that technique is available at your area.

I am 32 years old female. had slight stomach pain which went away after i ate around Jan 2015. Doctor tested for H Pylori and it was positive. I finished my 14 day prev pac on Feb. 7 and I feel worse than before.
I also saw fresh red blood on my stool on 9th Feb., not a lot. But not since. My pain is mostly below my navel on right side and it hurts when I press on it. I am freaking out. Doctor said to do endoscopy and colonoscopy but my husband said we should wait since antibiotics causes all sort of issues. Does anyone feel similar?? I didnt have all these pain before the treatment. Also, my pain before treatment would go away after I ate.
I take probiotic and 20 mg omeprazole daily. I worry if its cancer of something.

the "bitter" taste, is probably similar to "metalic" taste we described. Most likely due to the clarithromycin. Some people does experience the terrible taste after taking the antibiotic. But I have never heard a severe case like yours. Perhaps you want to discuss with your doctor about it?

Otherwise, I would recommend you to complete the treatment to avoid antibiotic resistance.
