Continuing gut pain after triple therapy

The various unpleasant manifestations of Helicobacter can be described here. Remember however that the great majority of persons with Hp have no symptoms that they are aware of and consider themselves normal.

No retesting

Post by Theresa »

Doc told me yesterday that they don't normally retest...apparently triple therapy has 90% success rate so once you have done that it's good enough. Has anyone heard that before?
Also can hpylori cause stomach discomfort if no gastritis visible? Therefore, is the absence of stomach pain an indication of cure?
Thank you.

In Europe, cure rate of triple therapy has dropped below 60% and triple therapy is no longer in use. However, cure rate of triple therapy is still over 80% in Australia. This is mainly due to the antibiotic regulation of the country. So Triple therapy has good cure rate depending on your exposure to antibiotics.

Nevertheless, it is good to get a retest done to be sure. Otherwise, you may be wasting time hoping for a recovery that will never come.

All H. pylori causes inflammation in the stomach (gastritis). However, not all inflammation will lead to symptoms.

Thank you for the response. I am in canada and docs suggest protocol is to NOT retest due to high eradication rate. Hmmm. Not sure whether to insist.
I am trying to understand the issue of symptoms or not and whether inflammation is visible. Can a gastroscopy show inflammation or can it exist and insides look normal. I am confused as gastrodoc says stomach pain and digestive issues are not typical symptoms of hpylori. That h pylori typically doesnt have symptoms. Everything I read says H pylori can cause symptoms. Is there a definitive reference site that can be suggested as drs are not fond of Dr Google.
Thank you

most people with carry H. pylori without symptoms. I think it is to do with age and health condition. When you are young and healthy, your body is able to tolerate H. pylori, and you do not have symptoms. I believe as you get older, your immune system and repair mechanism deteriorate, then you'll feel the symptoms.

Your treatment is fine. I still think it is best to confirm that your HP is truly eradicated even if the cure rate is high. I know the Inuits in Canada has higher rate of gastric cancer.
