How is it possible to test positive for HP through blood test and negative when doing the biopsy from a gastroscope?

There are several types of tests for H.pylori. The major ones have a their own forum.

How is it possible to test positive for HP through blood test and negative when doing the biopsy from a gastroscope?

Post by Bpositive » Tue May 09, 2017 4:35 pm

I had blood work done for HP about a week before I received my appointment for a gastroscopy test and tested positive. During my procedure they took some samples and did a biopsy for h-Pylori which tested negative. How is this Possible I hadn't started the antibiotics until after the gastroscope test????

You should do an Hpylori breath test. Blood test will only show that you were infected at some point in your life. Endoscopy isn't always accurate especially if they don't get a biopsy from the right area.

it is true that blood test can only show history of infection. so, you may have taken some antibiotics recently for whatever disease and accidentally knock out H. pylori. Although this scenario is rare, it is not impossible.

Gastri biopsy test is quite accurate. Assuming that the Specialist did a CLOtest and a histology. If both tests came back negative, then you are almost pretty sure negative.

CLOtest can be wrong if you were taking PPI before endoscopy.

PPI can lead to lower acid, then other organism can grow and suppress H. pylori.

So with low load of H. pylori, it's harder to see in histology; lower UBT or stool test; and weaker CLOtest.

Hence, PPI can lead to false negative for all.

Hi, here is a guideline how long each medication should be stopped before getting a HP test. Although this guideline is for UBT, it works for every other tests, except Blood test.

Hi Heico_Expert, quick question? I just came back from my G.I. appointment today. Dr. has scheduled an HP breath test in 1 month from now.
Im supposed to be off my PPI meds for a minimum 30 days prior to my breath test in order to get an accurate test result.
I will be stopping my Tecta medication today but I'm still on DOMPERICONE MELEATE 10mg 3 times per day and Sucralfate 1000mg 4 times a day.
will this affect my results?

have a look at this guideline. Domperidone is fine. But the sucralfate will have to be stopped 14 days prior breath test.
