unfortunately antibiotics treatment is the only scientific way to get rid of H. pylori to date.

you can look for a good specialist that has access to H. pylori culture. by finding out what your HP is resistant and sensitive to, you can reduce the use useless antibiotics.

Hi Helico Expert

I read that a test on native Egyptian’s with HP showed significant resistance to metronidazole - does that mean HP acquired in Egypt by a person from England, such as me, would have zero success using metronidazole with say Amoxicillin? or does antibiotic resistance not work like that?

Thank you

Chris

Hi Chris,

First of all, HP is usually acquired when you are young. So you might not have the Egypt strain, if you did not grow up in Egypt. Of course, you may catch it from your partner in your adulthood. But the chance is much lower assuming that you and your partner practice good hygiene.

Metronidazole resistance is most likely happened when you were previously given such antibiotic for other diseases. It is commonly prescribed by dentist or when you had parasite infection. Since one antibiotic cannot kill HP, and if you were previously treated with Mettonidazole or Clarithromycin for other diseases, very likely your strain is already resistant to it.

Nevertheless, metronidazole resistance can sometimes be overcomed by having higher dose. Can discuss with your doctor about it.

Thank you Helico Expert

So just to be clear as I’m trying to make sense of all this and the whole situation is causing me so much anxiety.

I went on holiday to Egypt 6 yrs ago, I came home with wartery stools. A few years later I’ve had some mild symptoms which I linked to H Pylori via Google. They did not concern my GP.

Hypothetically, had I picked up the Egyptian strain, assuming I personnally have not exposed to Metronidazole, this antibiotic could still work? Is that correct?

H. pylori doesnt cause diarrhea. If I remember Prof. Marshall self experimental experience, once you are infected, you will vomit for a few days, then a week later you'll feel nothing. you'll develop bad breath and the gradually some very mild gastritis symptom.

The best way to diagnose H. pylori is by Breath or stool test. Any GP will be able to perform those test for you. If you had never taken Metronidazole or Chlarithromycin, you can use any or both, in addition of Amoxicillin and PPI (preferable not omeprazole).

The tips of increase cure rate is
1. higher dose of Amox and PPI
2. take bismuth in the same time

Hi Helico Expert

I finally took a blood finger prick test at a Health Clinic and and it came back negative.

I have no real symptoms at the moment other than minor heartburn if I drink too much coffee.

I want to move on with my life and stop obsessing with HP all day, every day.

Do you think the chance of false negative is low?

The blood test checks for antibodies in the blood, if I had HP would I most likely have HP antibodies in my blood? I had shingles last September and am worried that could mean I have weak immune system although I feel fit and strong now with now issues.

I think the finger prick test is less sensitive. You should get a breath or stool test if possible.

Thanks Helico Expert.

Appreciate the finger prick test is less sensitive than breath or stool but if I’ve never been treated before for HP and not had antibiotics, should I be overly concerned about a false negative? Or is a negative result likely to be hegative. The clinician read the result and said there was no ambiguity, mine was a clear negative.

i think it's better to get an absolute true result. Otherwise you are just wasting time waiting for a recovery that will never come.
