What else can I take on top of the antibiotics?

Post by John46 »

About 5 weeks ago I was woke up in the middle of the night with servere stomach pain a couple of inches right of my naval ,
Over the next few days the pain eased but I started to get pain just below my ribs / lower sternum area couple with bloating / wind and pains below my naval and in my back , these pains were only a 4/10 but still annoying .
I went to the docs and had 2 blood tests which were clear but my stool sample was positive for hpylori so I was put on 14 days of amoxicillin and clarithromycin plus a 4 week course of lasoprozole .
I finished the antibiotics 1 week ago and the symptoms are almost gone although during treatment the symptoms would ease for a few days and then flare up for a few days so I am praying that i don't get another flare up .
Still getting a bit of indegesion / wind after meals but nothing major .
I would like to ask if there is anything I can take to help recovery ? I am taking vitamin E and aloe Vera juice is mastek gum worth taking?
Also I am wondering why I need the lansoprozole still? I thought I would be prescribe this for an ulcer but surely my blood/stool sample can not show signs of an ulcer?

it's difficult to understand how you could have negative blood test but positive stool test. The blood test is normally more sensitive than the stool test. It is more common to see a false positive than a false negative in blood test. So, I would suggest you to get another test, hopefully breath test to confirm if you still have H. pylori with you.

Sorry it was the first blood test that was negative , my second blood test and stool sample showed hpylori .

Does this bacteria actually cause symptoms then ? Or so the symptoms only show when hpylori causes an ulcer ?

many people who carry H. pylori do not showed symptom. However, many people who walk into the hospital that complain about stomach problems, has H. pylori.

Since the discovery of H. pylori treatment, we hardly see any ulcer cases anymore. So all our patients have symptoms without ulcers.

you come to the right place to learn all about H. pylori.

H. pylori is a bacteria discovered in 1984 by Prof. Barry James Marshall and Prof. John Robin Warren.

They discovered that this bacteria leads to stomach ulcer and increase stomach cancer risk by more than 10x.

They also developed a simple diagnostic kit to determine the infection and a simple cure to this infection.

before their discovery, stomach disease is a life-time disease. The two treatments available are long term PPI and surgery removal of stomach.

Their discovery reduced the need for long term PPI and unnecessary surgery.

Since the upper digestive system problem is solved, most of the specialist turned their focus to the lower digestive system. So indirectly, their discovery of this bacteria and treatment also reduced the lower digestive problems.

This discovery improved millions of people's quality of life. So, in 2005, Prof. Barry James Marshall and Prof. John Robin Warren were awarded the Nobel Prize.

In a more modern research of H. pylori suggest that it may not be a pathogen. This is because there are more than 50% of the world population carrying this bacteria. But only a handful of them produce symptoms. in addition, studies have shown that children infected with H. pylori showed less chance of developing allergies to dust and food.

This is a very wide topic. Let me know which area you like to know more.
