many times, GP just follow guidelines. it's standard protocol to protect themselves.

anyway, discuss with your specialist that you are meeting. tell him about bismuth and amoxi treatment.

Helicobacter pylori will never become resistant to bismuth and amoxicillin. So you can always have those two in your combination.

Hi, I was diagnosed with HP in June after having heartburn, pain in chest and elbow and dramatic weight loss. I went from 156 pds to 137 since the diagnosis. Was given a blood test to confirm, then Clarithromycin, Metronidazole, and lansoprazole. I have also been diagnosed with agoraphobia, PTSD, GAD, and Pharmaphobia which is a phobia for taking meds of any kind, which came from taking a muscle relaxer back in 2000 for back spasm, which caused the panic and anxiety attacks. This has made it impossible to take these meds. I have researched this illness and the drugs used to treat it, and the side affects are devastating according to hundreds posting on certain forums relating to HP. I need to be healed from this and need to know if any one here have experienced awful side affects from these meds, and if anyone know if there is a 100% natural cure for it. I was told by a pharmacist that I can take pepto bismol instead of the Lansoprazole (substitute for Prevacid), and chamomile tea to help with the anxiety. My doc gave me Hydroxyzine for the anxiety. Before the HP, I was able to manage the anxiety with the tea alone, but the phobias continued. Feedback on this will be much appreciated.

Hi, thanks for sharing your story.

The treatment you are having is very standard. Like any antibiotics, you'll probably experience some bowel problem. with Clarithromycin, you'll probably experience some metalic taste in your mouth.

The cure rate is reported to be about 70-80%, depends if you were expose to these antibioics before.

you can take pepto bismol together with your triple therapy. I remember seeing a study that add bismol into their triple therapy and boosted the cure rate to over 90%. Maybe is worth a try.

Am sorry to be the one to say this, but H. Pylori has been my constant companion for three years. I did all the treatments I was supposed to for two weeks. It was so bad that my gums turned green . I have been to many doctors and have finally been told that there are some unlucky people that will always get the symptoms even if they are negative on their test. I am one of those :x I get sick about every four months on the dot. I am miserable for two to three weeks and then its gone as fast as it appears. I have been retested and its always negative. My GI dr. said some people will live with this for life. I am done with meds and have been taking natural supplements to help. It has improved. It used to last for a month and now it's about two weeks. I take coconut oil, raw honey and oil of oregano. I have noticed that the symptoms are not as bad as before. I have been doing this regimen for about six months and have only felt sick twice. Sometimes there are no right or wrong answers and you just have to learn to live with it as best you can. Good luck to all. :)

it's a shame. Do keep us posted on your treatment. We have a good success rate on PPI + Bismuth + Rifabutin + Ciprofloxacin. If you have never tried any of about drug, maybe you can discuss with your doctor about trying them.

I can certainly appreciate your frustration with GPs. I ran into a similar situation with my GP who suggested that some of my symptoms are normal (e.g. gas, vibrations in the gut, and bloatedness after a meal) and nothing to worry about. He did however got me to do the breath test because I complaint a lot about being tired all the time even with plenty of rest, acid reflux, pain in my stomach, etc. My breath test result turned out to be 4000dpm, apparently the highest he'd ever seen.

I respect my GP and value his help very much but sometimes I get a little bit frustrated trying to communicate my stomach symptoms. I feel that it may be to do with H. Pylori being a fairly recent discovery and more research are needing to be done. I think my GP is treading carefully on H. Pylori as he always says he's not an expert on the bacteria and there could be other things causing my symptoms. I was even told to Google for H. Pylori. Perhaps GPs could be equipped with better understanding of H. Pylori so that they have more confidence in giving the diagnosis and are prepared to answer some complex H. Pylori related questions from patients.

After the triple therapy, I still have a fair bit of gas, vomited a couple of times, and get the crippling pain every now and then. I'm trying to be as optimistic and patient as possible and hope for a better breath test result next time :)

I hope everything works out well with the new GP for you HP Pete and all the best with your future treatment!
