Prevalence of H. Pylori infection by state in the US

How do you catch Hp? From your mother when she kisses you? From brothers and sisters as a small child? From sexual partners as adults (kissing)? From dirty water (fecal contamination)? From animals? Who knows???

Prevalence of H. Pylori infection by state in the US

Post by Ravi Ippili »

Hello all,

Is it possible to get the state wise prevalence numbers of H. Pylori infection in the US? As a part of my research, I am trying to project numbers from secondary data in H. Pylori disease area to a national level. I tried looking for these numbers in cdc.gov, gastro.org etc. I could not find any info related to this.

Secondly, I am also looking for US national/state level usage of H. Pylori procedures (Breath tests (CPT: 83013, 83104, 78267, 78268), Stool tests (CPT: 87338, 87339), Endoscopy (43239) & Blood tests (86677, 87081) ).

It will be really great if someone can help me with the above info if he/she has it handy or redirect me to an URL or document that can provide more details on the above.

Thanks in advance. :)

Hi Helico_expert,

Thanks much for your quick response. :)

The links that you provided are useful but I am looking for prevalence rates at a US state level. Including the links that you provided, I have done additional literature review but none of them seem to have the info that I am looking for.

Is it possible that the H. Pylori disease prevalence information is not aggregated at a regional level ever? :o Sounds impossible. :? Let me do some more research from my side before I reach to the above conclusion.

Please let me know in case you have any ideas for getting this info systematically.

Thanks a lot. :)

unfortunately (or fortunately) H. pylori infection is a very chronic infection. It's prevalence in developing country (or among good social economic population) is low. In addition, it's easily controllable by antibiotic and people who further developed severe diseases are low. Hence, there hasnt been much focus on H. pylori infection. probably that's why it's not important enough for anyone to conduct a nationwide surveillance.

Nevertheless, you can probably gather a few studies from various states and conclude the "nationwide" prevalence.

Just a tip. US is a very big country with many different ethnic population. I think it can be misleading if you just target the prevalence of US. For example, I would expect lower prevalence among the educated and high social economy people living in the modern city and higher prevalence among the less educated and lower social economy groups living away from the city.

another example.
In Australia, the Caucasian has a prevalence rate of around 15% while the aboriginals in the rural area have a prevalence rate of 90%. On the other hand, aboriginals living in the modern city have a prevalence rate of around 60%.
