Gastritis After H.Pylori

The various unpleasant manifestations of Helicobacter can be described here. Remember however that the great majority of persons with Hp have no symptoms that they are aware of and consider themselves normal.

Gastritis After H.Pylori

Post by qui »

H.Pylori is making its way around my neighborhood, as I know five people recently diagnosed (myself included). I won't bore you with pages on how the diagnosis came about, we all know how that goes down. So instead, I'll get to the point: The endoscopy/biopsy said H.Pylori and acute chronic gastritis. During my H.Pylori treatment, I did not recover as well as other people I knew did. While they felt a little worn out and had a lack of appetite, I lost 25 lbs over 2 months and in the first week of treatment, called out of work because my stomach pain was so intense I couldn't even function, and it took me 30-60 minutes to eat a meal as minimal as a sandwich. (My gloriously indifferent GI specialist, who clearly flunked the bedside manner course, repeatedly told me as I called their office in tears that this was a "tough regimen", and basically my extreme symptoms were just too damn bad. )

Symptoms have improved since then, and I did finish the 14 day treatment, but eating is still touch and go and my appetite is nil. The H.Pylori is gone but, and I was told this almost as an afterthought, "Oh you were diagnosed for acute chronic gastritis... you should still be getting treated for that..." Brilliant.

So my query is such: Am I naive in thinking that, since I've been on omeprazole for almost three months (even a few weeks before the H.Pylori diagnosis/treatment), I should be having minimal symptoms? Such as, not having cramping/pain when my stomach is empty, and being able to handle a full meal, and having two bites of hot dog not make me sick? Google searches only give general overviews of symptoms, they don't go into the nitty gritty. Therefore, I'm hoping someone else has gone through a similar diagnosis and can provide insight. I am not asking my doctor anything unless I'm at least 50% certain I won't be received with a suppressed sigh of boredom.

thank you for sharing your story. I would like to know how did you find out your H. pylori is gone? if you did a breath test, did you stop PPI for at least 2-3 weeks?

I did indeed do a breath test, which meant being off the PPI for two weeks. I've been back on the PPI for 2 days now (I know it says it takes 7 for full effect to start), but it just feels like a really drawn out length of stomach discomfort. Is this normal to expect?

The recovery is different from people to people. Some lucky people felt good immediately after treatment. Some less lucky people may take up to 3 months or years to be back to 100%. However, as long as you are 100% sure that your H. pylori is eradicated, no inherited bad stomach genes, no bad diets (eg. high salt), and most importantly, always fill yourself with positive thoughts, you'll be ok.

i myself fully recovered. I must say this forum is biased to members with problems. It is logical to think that patients who got their treatment done without any complication would not join this website. Therefore, most of the member here are with some kind of complication. in our clinic, almost 90% of the patients gone back to normal after proven HP eradication.

I am sorry you misunderstood what i meant. Yes, you are right that not everyone with H. pylori will come up with a problem. In fact, only 10% of the carrier develop ulcers.

I was trying to explain that only those with treatment complication actually come into this forum. Many patients who got treated right away dont bother checking the website for alternative solutions. This is why this website is setup to help patients with complications. This is why you have a biased population here with lots of difficulties recovering.
