Newly Diagnosed

The various unpleasant manifestations of Helicobacter can be described here. Remember however that the great majority of persons with Hp have no symptoms that they are aware of and consider themselves normal.

So, it's been 2 months since I was diagnosed and treated for H Pylori. I have a breath test this coming Thursday to find out if it's gone. I don't seem to have the original symptoms that I had before treatment. What I'm left with now is very high anxiety (very hard to leave the house) and a "lump-like" feeling in my throat that gets worse the more anxious I become. I have read other comments on this website and other websites where people have high anxiety after H Pylori treatment. Is there a connection?

Hi,

first of all, congratulation that you successfully eradicated your H. pylori. Now, hopefully your symptoms will slowly subside through time. I also like to comment about your 3L of electrolytes. Although it's a "good" drink, I believe anything too much will become bad thing. So, try to balance your diet. Plenty of fruits and soluble fibers.

about your lump behind the throat, like you said, you are not the only one. a few people comment about this before. However, it is still not confirm if there is a connection to H. pylori.

Anyway, try to be optimistic. A happy person is a healthy person. After all, you are a winner from H. pylori infection.

I just wanted to update anyone who was interested in the outcome of my H-Pylori situation...... I did the treatment and did a breath test which came back negative...thank the lord!! I did ask my gastroenterologist about the feeling of "something caught in my throat" and he instantly knew what I was talking about and said I had the classic symptoms of Globus Sensation.... Globus sensation can be caused by GERD and anxiety. You can Google it for more information. This really took a load off my mind and my symptoms have actually pretty much disappeared since I got the Reflux under control.
Just thought I would share that knowledge. I hope it helps someone out there!

Thank you for your post about the Globus. I have this also. It really feels like there is something in my throat, but I've had two scopes done and there is nothing there and no sign of anything which has actually relieved the pain somewhat. Congrats on eradicating it!! I should find out tomorrow about my test. Hoping for the best news in months! Regarding the Globus sensation, I had asked before whether it is related to the H Pylori or the treatment and there was no definitive answer. I'm beginning to think based on other comments and my own experience that it is. Best of luck to you in your recovery :D

I just found this study that was done on a possible connection of H Pylori and Globus.

I have only been treated once and would like to know that it is gone, but neither my gastro nor my gp think it is worth doing the follow-up test. They say that if you finish up the anti-biotics, they just assume that you are cured until you experience more problems. The problem with that is every expert states that each person will have symptoms even after the treatment is given. Some people have the symptoms for days or even months afterward. Do you think that may be the case with you? I hope you feel better soon!

You probably have the same British doctor I have, you have to really push for them to even look at you.

Hi Everyone,

I was diagnosed with HP yesterday after an agonising wait. Prior to diagnosis I came down with Pneumonia back in August. Spent a few days in hospital. Anyway I'm wondering if this triggered the HP to flare up. My doctor recons I had HP for awhile. I recon he's right. I've had ongoing issues with my digestive system and gut for along time and I think the HP infection has contributed to those problems.

Anyway... been to the ER several times I ended up self diagnosing. I went back to ER and told Doctor I had ulcers because it felt like I had. Doctor said it probably isnt ulcers. What amazed me is my ultra sound came back normal. ER Doctor told me they couldnt treat me for HP. Found that alittle odd. Anyway because I took antibiotics prior to diagnosis I had to wait 4 weeks. It was full on.

I've been so run down, tired and fatigued and depressed. Ive been very sick. Anyway i'm on my second day of triple antibiotic treatment plan. Looking forward to the 7th day when I finish. I have meet with gastro surgeon 3rd Dec to discuss endoscopy.

All I can say is this HP infection is full on. I've never been so sick in my life. It really gets you down and affects your well being...

an endoscopy checkup is good. at least it's more sensitive than ultra sound checking. Then again, if you can wait a little longer, say 3 to 4 weeks after your current treatment, then do the endoscopy, you can find out if your current treatment work by histology and bacteria culture.

if your treatment failed, then the bacteria culture will be very useful as you can request the doctor for antibiotic sensitivity test on the bacteria and find out exactly what antibiotics you should be taking instead of trying again and again.

I was diagnosed with this malady yesterday. I spoke with the GI over the phone who informed me that the stool samples had indicated positive for H Pylori. I pressed him a little asking if he believed that my myriad of symptoms and problems over the last 21 years could be caused by this bug. I noticed a hesitation in his response but he did say yes its possible.
I became acutely ill in the fall of 1991, my symptoms were vomiting, diarrhea, black tarry stools, blood in my stool, undigested fat or food in stool, a slight fever, dizziness, palpatations, bloating, belching, gas, and over a period of 6 months I lost thirty lbs. I am now a 53 year old male. In 1991 I had all the indicated tests including cardiac workups. I had no ulcers and only a few slight abnormalities. For instance I failed a glucose tolerance test. My Liver function tests were to the high side of normal. I had a atrial rythm malady that showed up occasionally. I saw GI doctors, endocrinologists, cardiologists and finally pshychologists and psychiatrists. I was led to believe that stress or nerves could cause these symptoms and while I never fully accepted the diagnosis as I reflect I did develop some anxiety and depression especially during those first couple of years. I was placed on Xanax and can't recall all the anti depressents that we tried. I admitted then and still do that the xanax did take the edge off the IBS and the palpatation which still exist. By 2005 I was in worse shape than 1991. I still had all the digestive symptoms, although they didn't seem as acute and severe but by then I had become tolerant and addicted to anti anxiety medication. I required an inpatient drug rehabilitation program in order to stop using the drugs. I returned to a new GI doc in the summer of 2005. I repeated all the indicated tests, still no ulcer, but he did discover I had become fructose intolerant and had an " overgrowth" of bacteria in my stomach. I dont recall the bacteria being Identified as anything other than " overgrowth" . It was discovered through a breath test. I took an antibiotic for 10 days I believe with no improvement. I was referred to a cardiologist for the palpatations and bloating and underwent catheterization which showed no arterial disease. No other breath test was performed. My symptoms persisted. My only diagnosis was stress or a nervous condition causing IBS.
I owned a Water Well business and I always suspected a bug like Giardia or some contamminated water born bacteria. I had a bad habit when I was young and invincible of tasting the water we had just drilled into before disinfection to better determine the quality of the product I was about to produce. A habit that I always mentioned to physicians. In an attempt to eliminate stress from the situation and remain drug free in 2007 I sold my business and my generous and supportive and loving wife of over 30 years agreed to support us. My wife is a nurse. She never did and still doesn't agree that my symptoms are a result of stress or a nervous condition. Eliminating the stress of running my business hasn't helped in fact in some ways I believe it has mad my symptoms worse.
I vowed to never enter a doctors office again until recently I found out I was going to be a grandpa. I was persuaded to revisit the issues about 6 months ago, and yesterday, my second GI specialist in 2 months ( I sensed the first wasn't listening) informed me of this malady. Please excuse my lack of confidence but I must exercise caution. The letdowns over the years have been so many. These symptoms have been a drain on everyone in my life and its hard to get optimistic. I couldn't help but notice the hesitation in the Drs voice that the antibiotics he prescibed will be a magic cure. I remember in 2005 the 10 days of misery with the single antibiotic that didn't help. I will get through it with hopefully the appropriate degree of pessimism and a determination to get it right this time. To ask more questions. To demand more time and thought.
I haven't had the endoscopy yet this round so I have no way of knowing whether or not I have developed an ulcer or worse. I guess my question here for those who may know is do you believe it possible to have this bug along with very severe possibly associated symptoms to it, for over 20 years, without creating lasting or permanent damage to my digestive system?
