Re: Helicobacter pylori and Probiotics

Hi all - this is a thread that's up my street. Agreed: probiotics alone haven't been shown to eliminate H pylori (at least I haven't seen the studies if they are out there). But there are many studies indicating probiotics enhance the efficacy of triple therapy, and also reduce side effects. Not eve...

Re: Could share foods transmit H.pylori ?

A detection rate of 2% in a population of 1billion people, as it would be in China, for example, of 315m, as it would be in the US, is still very high when converted into actual numbers rather than %. When I had H pylori, I had my girlfriend tested. She also had H pylori. We then had her brother tes...

Re: Have i been given the wrong treatment

wiperpaul, Hpylori_apprentice is dead right. The meds you've been given are for shutting down stomach acid, not for killing H pylori. Omeprazole shuts stomach acid production off completely. If your symptoms remain while taking that med, your issue is very unlikely to be caused by high levels of sto...

Re: Helicobacter aftermath

There can be a number of reasons why the symptoms take time to clear up. 1. H pylori is still there (even if a test says negative, the H pylori can still be there) 2. It takes time for the gut lining to heal in some people (as you correctly say) 3. There are other bugs in the system that are causing...

Re: Suggestion after failed 2nd h.pylori treatment

I'll throw my ten-pence worth in here. First, H pylori symptoms can be caused by many other factors. Low stomach acid, other bad bugs such as candida and parasites, other bad bacteria, dehydration can all cause similar symptoms, or the same symptoms, as H pylori. So they all need to be considered. I...

Got the numbers wrong - here's the study: Dig Dis Sci. 1999 Jun;44(6):1173-6. Use of chopsticks for eating and Helicobacter pylori infection. Leung WK, Sung JJ, Ling TK, Siu KL, Cheng AF. Source Department of Medicine and Therapeutics, Prince of Wales Hospital, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shati...

Re: Could share foods transmit H.pylori ?

They did a study that showed even washed chopsticks still had H pylori on them.

I can't remember the precise details, but I think they looked at something like 20 pairs of chopsticks and found H pylori on 2 pairs, even after they'd been washed.

Crazy stuff!

Best,
Dave Hompes.

Re: Is there a link between heart disease and HP?

If you go to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/ and search, you'll find plenty there. Try typing in H pylori along with keywords such as homocysteine, oxidative damage, stroke, atherosclerosis, etc. Of course, as always the studies conclude "more studies are needed...." but when you understand the ...

Re: Food not to be eaten when infected with H Pylori

The issue of foods and H pylori is more complex than most people think and needs time to be explained. First, many common foods irritate the gut and can cause the same or similar symptoms as H pylori: - gluten, cow's milk, soy, PUFAs, coffee, certain spices - these are all irritating to the gut in S...

Re: Is there a link between heart disease and HP?

Hi HPgirl, I'm currently writing my second book on H pylori - it's actually specifically on the topic of H pylori and Heart Disease. There's now quite a lot of research showing how H pylori causes metabolic changes that increase heart disease risk factors. Homocysteine, blood pressure, insulin resis...
